The eight-month-old baby who is among survivors of last Saturday’s fatal crash at Mahaica has been moved from the Paediatric Ward into the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Georgetown Hospital.
Infant Jonathan Bourne, according to his relative, was moved to the ICU and is connected to a breathing machine after he suffered a bout of “heavy breathing.” A CT scan result showed that he suffered a fracture to the front of his skull. The relative said the family was assured that the injury would heal because the infant was still growing. There was no visible injury to the child but his eyes were swollen when he became a patient of the hospital.
The crash claimed six lives.
Meanwhile, still in the ICU is Doreen Dutchin, 42, of Mahaicony, whose condition is still listed as stable. Her husband told this newspaper yesterday that some days she is responsive and others she is just sleeping. She is now taking liquids, he says.
Meanwhile the mother of Bourne, Cleiva Williams, patient of the Female Surgical Ward, said that she is feeling better and the pain is not as severe as it was. The 29-year-old had to receive stitches to parts of her face and sustained a leg injury.
Dwayne Holder, 30 of No 30 Village, WCD is still a patient of the Male Surgical Ward as well. He gave a thumb up yesterday when asked how he was feeling. He suffered injuries to the face.
Meanwhile, three other survivors, Anille Arthur, 17, of Rosehall, Corentyne; Dhandar Drepaul, 23 of D’Edward Village, WCD and Marvin Ramphal, 30, of Cotton Tree, WCD, were discharged from hospital.
The accident occurred on Saturday night when a minibus travelling to Berbice smashed into the rear of a sand truck at Mahaica. Based on reports the driver of the truck had no lights on at the time of the collision and had stopped abruptly, resulting in the smash up. The driver who was under the influence of alcohol, yesterday pleaded guilty to a drunk driving charge at the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court. (see story on page 19).
The passenger count in the bus was said to be 13 and everyone suffered serious injuries. Five persons died on Saturday while the sixth person died on Sunday.
