The national cricket selectors have omitted two former young West Indies captains from a 21-member squad named to prepare for next year’s regional tournament.
Former young West Indies captains Leon Johnson and Steven Jacobs were left out of the squad released by the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) yesterday.
Included though are the four players on West Indies duty in Australia.
National captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, former International Cricket Council’s world ranked number one batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Travis Dowlin and Narsingh Deonarine have been named in the squad which is expected to be encamped from next week.
Guyana, who finished last in the doubled round WICB first class tournament earlier this year, will be looking to make amends next year.
Talented young batsmen Rajendra Chandrika and Vishal Singh, who both scored centuries in the recently-concluded Guyana Cricket Board’s four-day tournament, are included in the squad.
So too is all-rounder Deon Ferrier, who has been in good form lately with the bat and ball.
Essequibo and Police medium pacer Trevor Benn has finally been acknowledged by the national selectors as, apart from the experienced Esaun Crandon, he has been the most accurate and economical fast bowler in the four-day tournament.
Brandon Bess, widely believed to be the fastest bowler in Guyana and spin twins Devendra Bishoo and Veerasammy Permaul, are among the bowlers named in the squad.
Squad reads: Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Travis Dowlin, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Rajendra Chandrika, Vishal Singh, Assad Fudadin, Royston Crandon, Gajanand Singh, Christopher Barnwell, Esaun Crandon, Brandon Bess, Davindra Bishoo, Veersammy Permaul, Deon Ferrier, Andre Stoll, Keyron Joseph, Trevor Benn, Derwin Christian and Anthony Bramble.
