Prompted by the complaints of parents, the Home Ministry has launched a campaign against the sale of pornography in public places.
The Ministry has published an advisory outlining the laws against the sale of such material.
Home Affairs Minister Clement Rohee told Stabroek News during a brief interview that members of the public have been observing and making comments about the peddling or pornographic materials.
Further, he said people have been calling for action and he also disclosed that it was an issue that was brought to the attention of the National Commission for Law and Order. “So, it’s only natural that we have to launch a campaign against them,” he said.
Pornographic material featuring local school aged girls has been circulated in recent year, while pornographic material has been easily accessible.
The Ministry’s campaign is aimed at stamping out the sale of pornographic material, including CDs and DVDs, at public places and commercial enterprises in Guyana.
Anyone caught dealing in such material will be subject to a fine ranging from $25,000 to $50 000 or 12 months imprisonment.
The ministry has asked that all CD and DVD vendors take careful note of the advisory and bring themselves into conformity with the law or face prosecution.
