A porter was yesterday charged with lifting a quantity of jewellery off a six-year-old boy.
Imran Khan, 22, of 80 Little Diamond East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty yesterday when he appeared before Magistrate Priya Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on a charge of larceny from the person. He was granted bail to the tune of $200,000.
The allegation is that on November 22, at Georgetown, Khan stole jewellery valued $254,000 from Ramie Basdeo. The jewellery is listed as the property of Sheiniza Balram.
In giving the facts of the case, the prosecution told the court that on the day in question, the parties involved in the matter were all attending a wedding reception when Khan took the boy in a corner and removed the jewellery from him.
An alarm was raised and Khan escaped but was later apprehended and arrested by the police.
The prosecution objected to bail on the grounds that there is a likelihood of Khan committing similar offences.
Attorney Vic Puran, who represented Khan, sought reasonable bail on the grounds that he had no previous convictions, poses no risk of flight, has a fixed address and has been fully cooperating with the police force in its investigations.
Khan was ordered to return to the Providence Magistrates’ Court on December 16.
