East Coast Demerara’s women’s cricketers yesterday scored a seven-wicket victory over Georgetown in the final of the Guyana Cricket Board’s inter-ward, limited overs women’s tournament at the Demerara Cricket Club ground in Queenstown.
Georgetown won the toss and batted and were shot out for 63 in only 24.5 of the allotted 40 overs.
Latoya Smith top scored with an undefeated 19 as Reneka Isaacs (2-9) and Angela Walrond (2-11) hastened Georgetown’s demise.
National off-spinner Davanie Sewnarine led from the front with figures of 2-10.
She later returned to score 19 before retiring hurt. Darlene Gayle, who stroked three boundaries in her 19, also provided support as the ECD reached 64-3 in just 19.5 overs.
After the game, Coach Latchman Yadram said that his team’s strategy was always to focus on winning.
He revealed that his team wanted to win the toss and post a big total which would have given his girls some much needed time at the wicket. However, he was satisfied with the result nevertheless and said his side was anticipating their matchup between Essequibo next week. He stated that he has a good crop of players and they will be going into next week’s game a confident bunch.
