Almost two weeks after the grisly Mahaica crash that left six persons dead, eight-month-old Jonathan Bourne is now breathing on his own.
However he is still a patient of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Bourne was moved to ICU after he suffered a bout of “heavy breathing” last week. A CT scan showed that the baby suffered a fracture of the front of his skull. Relatives were assured by medical personnel that the injury would heal.
Meanwhile Doreen Dutchin who was injured in the accident is also still a patient of the ICU. Her husband said that she was “coming around”. And Cleiva Williams, Bourne’s mother has since been discharged.
On November 21, a minibus travelling to Berbice smashed into the rear of a sand truck at Mahaica. The accident was among the most horrific in recent memory. Six persons died in the accident and seven were injured.
The driver of the truck, Sheik Sattaur of Mahaicony was subsequently charged and pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol before Magistrate Haywant Ramdhani at the Mahaica Magistrate’s Court and was remanded.
