BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Dave Callaghan’s pivotal all-round performance blasted South Africa past England by eight wickets Friday night and into the CLOBI Cup International Masters Twenty20 final.
Sent to bat at Kensington Oval, previously unbeaten England were restricted to 148 for eight off their 20 overs and South Africa replied with 154 for two off 19 overs, propelled by a dashing unbeaten 92 from Callaghan.
In spite of their loss, England progressed to last night’s final against the South Africans.
Mark Alleyne (64) was the only significant scorer for the England Masters, who rested their in-form batsman Graeme Hick.
Mark Ramprakash (21) and John Emburey (18) were England’s next highest scorers.
Callaghan was South Africa’s chief wicket-taker with three for 37 off his four overs, backed up by Lance Klusener (2-21).
The 44-year-old Callaghan, who played 29 One Day Internationals during the 1990s, ripped England’s bowling apart in his innings and was a mere eight runs short of a hundred when the South Africans achieved victory with one over to spare.
