A new post office is to be built soon at Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara and with this modern facility it is expected that services on the East Coast would meet the needs of the customers.
The new post office should be completed by the end of March 2010.
Chairman of the Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) Juan Edghill stated that Melanie’s Post Office has been closed for almost five years because of disrepair. Finances were limited to rectify the problem at that point, since the GPOC is run on self-generated funds, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.
Meanwhile, the contract for the new post office to be constructed has recently been awarded, according to Edghill, with the land being donated by the Regional Co-op.
And referring to rehabilitation and renovation works being carried out at the Skeldon, Eversham and Nigg Post Offices, Berbice, the GPOC chairman said that in excess of $8M has be expended to ensure that quality work is being done and the offices are upgraded with modernized equipment and facilities to provide efficient services to the public.
He stated also that security measures have been put in place and the GPOC is doing everything in its power to ensure that staff and customers are secure. The GPOC is in full co-operation with the Guyana Police Force although the corporation has put its own measures in place.
The GPOC has over the years been modernizing its 65 locations with the implementation of a number of initiatives which include the training of staff in customer care and efficiency, GINA added.
