A 23-year-old man was placed on $15,000 bail after he appeared yesterday before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on a charge of unlawful assault.
Chandra Gupta Persaud is alleged to have unlawfully assaulted Tagewattie Ramdeen on December 4 on Brickdam.
According to Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford, Persaud and the Virtual Compliant (VC) are husband and wife. The VC, he said, left her husband after she was assaulted on November 16. The defendant, he said, saw the VC on the street that morning and used their three-year-old child as an excuse to approach the woman.
Ramdeen told the court that she was heading to work that morning when the defendant approached her and asked about his son. He then roughed her up and she said he asked her for the wedding ring he had given her.
Magistrate Robertson called the matter to the bench where a discussion ensued. Persaud was later placed on $15,000 bail and told to return to Court Two on December 13. In the mean time the couple was also ordered to visit a probation officer.
