The 60-year-old guard who was left in a critical condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) following a hit-and-run is now stable.
Sewsankar Raymond of Lot 29, Le Ressouvenir, ECD, according to a relative, is now off of a life support machine. He is however still being monitored in the ICU. Raymond sustained head injuries.
The accident occurred on the Le Ressouvenir Public Road on the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) on Saturday afternoon around 5:30.
Reports are that Raymond left his home on bicycle to head to work at Happy Acres farther up the East Coast when he was struck down by a motor car. The man’s son had told this newspaper that his father was riding along the left side of the road when the car struck him from behind and the driver, who was reportedly under the influence of alcohol at the time, attempted to drive away from the scene.
Meanwhile, the driver and the car were taken to the Sparendaam Police Station where the man remains in police custody. According to the relative he was caught a few villages up the East Coast and suffered a thrashing by civilians before being handed over to the police.
