Lionel Jaikarran created history by becoming the youngest person to be elected president of the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) Monday night.
Running a clean campaign and using the slogan of US President, Barack Obama, “Change We Can”, the 43-year-old Jaikarran, a first time candidate, was elected over a veteran opponent.
According to a press release, the newly elected president presented a manifesto that promised change which appealed to the large turnout.
He proposed immediate long and short term plans to resuscitate the club’s lagging membership.
A few of his other campaign promises include amnesty for outstanding membership fees, daily catered lunches, free “hot spot” internet access, vibrant participation of lady members and mid-year membership progress reports. In his acceptance speech, Jaikarran said “the buck stops with me” and informed the membership that he and his team were approachable and had the club’s interest at heart.
He spoke of a previous president who once said that the concrete steps leading up to the club were “boot-studded” and thus the pockmarks on the stairs were a tradition of the glory and greatness that was once GCC and he intended to bring back such glory.
The other members of the newly elected Executive Committee are Ramsay Ali (Vice-President), Jameel Baksh (Secretary), Ramesh Seebaran (Treasurer) and Phillip Fernandes (Club Captain) while Deodat Singh, Glen Hanoman and Eon Caesar are the Committee Members.
