Seven health centres and one health post, situated between the villages of Belladrum and Ithaca, now have access to proper disposal of medical waste after the US Embassy commissioned a third ‘De Montfort’ style incinerator at the Fort Wellington Hospital, West Coast Berbice. The incinerator is part of the Guyana Safer Injection Project (GSIP), which seeks to prevent the medical transmission of HIV by reducing unsafe and inappropriate injections in Guyana. In this photograph Charge d’Affaires of the embassy, Karen Williams (second left) hands over the equipment to Regional Health Officer Venus Smart. Looking on are Regional Chairman Harinarine Baldeo (left), Regional Executive Officer Floyd Frank (right) and the operator of the equipment.
