SYDNEY, Australia, CMC – Six months after announcing that he had retired from boxing, Guyana’s former world super featherweight champion Gairy St Clair returned to the ring this past weekend with a narrow victory over Indonesia’s Moses Seran in a non-title bout.
Coming at 142 pounds, the heaviest ever in his 54-fight pro career, Australia-based St Clair squeezed out a very narrow points victory over Seran at the University of New South Wales.
Judge John Cauchi scored the bout 59-56 for St Clair and the other judges scored it closer, both giving the Caribbean boxer a 57-56 verdict.
St Clair was knocked down in round two but recovered to outwork his opponent for the narrow win, improving his ring record to 42 wins (18 knockouts) against 10 losses and two draws.
Seran’s record dipped to 21 wins (11 knockouts) against 17 losses.
In June this year, just weeks after suffering his third consecutive defeat and seventh loss in 10 fights, St Clair had announced that he had “officially retired as a boxer” but would continue as a trainer.
He had been stopped for the first time in his career when Jackson Asiku defeated him on a ninth-round technical knockout in late April.
St Clair’s biggest achievement was winning the International Boxing Federation (IBF) super-featherweight (130-pound) world title on July 29, 2006 when he defeated South African Cassius Baloyi on a unanimous decision in Gauteng, South Africa.
St Clair held the title for only three months, losing his first title defence to South African Malcolm Klassen.
