Two masked men attacked a female security guard early Thursday morning, clobbering her in the head with an iron bar before robbing her.
As she bled profusely after the attack, Surujdai Charran managed to telephone for help before losing consciousness. Charran, 41, who is attached to Instant Security Service (ISS), was stationed at Hand-in-Hand Insurance Company, Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown when the attack occurred.
At approximately 4.30am on Thursday while going about her routine at the location, she was attacked by two masked men. “I was at the front desk when these two persons approached me…they were masked,” she told Stabroek News from her hospital bed Thursday afternoon. The woman, who has been admitted to Georgetown Public Hospital’s Female Surgical Ward, was still clad in her bloody uniform. Her neck and head was heavily bandaged and she was being given oxygen. Hermon Persaud said he was informed by hospital staff that his common-law wife suffered a fractured skull.
Charran, slipping in and out of consciousness, could only relate that after hitting her about five times to the head with an iron bar, the two robbers took her gold jewelry, cellular phone, cardigan, pens and other items.
Meanwhile, Persaud said he was at work when he was informed by his superior at about 4.45am that something had happened to Charran. “I work just up the road from her at the Guyana Stores,” Persaud explained. “I was working when my superior shout and told me to rush over to my wife workplace quick because something bad happen to her…I learn later that she manage to telephone my workplace.”
When Persaud arrived at the location he found his reputed wife in “a pool of blood” unconscious. He recalled that there was no one in sight at the time and he immediately rushed Charran to the hospital. “When I got there I didn’t see anybody around. The place was absolutely shine,” Persaud said, “The only thing that was there was a piece of iron bar that was about three feet long and about two inches or more thick.”
Charran, according to Persaud, was wearing five gold rings and two chains when she was attacked. This is the first time, Persaud said, something like this has happened to Charran. “I keep telling her to stop working,” the man said, “but she just doesn’t want to…she wants to make sure she is providing some money too.”
Persaud said an ISS manager has since been in contact with him. However, the man is not sure whether his wife will qualify for any benefits. “She was on duty when she was attacked but I am not sure if she is insured or what sort of things she covered for,” Persaud stated. “The police are yet to come and take a statement from my wife. I guess they are giving her time to catch herself before they come.” The man said he was a bit disappointed that no one from the security firm visited his wife at the hospital to date, adding that it would bring some comfort to his injured wife.
Surujdai Charran Senior expressed shock at her daughter’s unfortunate incident when Stabroek News visited Charran’s Lot 2 Cove and John, East Coast Demerara home. Her daughter, Charran Senior said, has been working with ISS for a number of years. Charran, according to her mother, is the sole provider for her three children; the oldest 17 and the youngest 4.
