A 16-year-old is now nursing a chop wound in the Georgetown Public Hospital after she intervened in an argument between her parents.
Christine Dick of 27 Coldingen, East Coast Demerara was allegedly chopped on Monday evening with a saw by her irate stepfather.
According to her mother, Sharon Fung, she and her reputed husband were having an argument when Dick intervened asking her stepfather, “why you always cussing up we mother?”
Fung said the man went for a saw, came back and inflicted the serious wound to the girl’s right hand.
According to Fung, he “almost chop off she right hand”.
Fung said she took her daughter to the Vigilance Police Station and the man was taken into custody. She said that a CID officer took her daughter’s name, age and address and another officer advised her to take the child to the hospital and “take a medical”.
She said the doctor told her he will not issue the medical until he has finished examining her daughter who is due for an x-ray. She said she related this to the police.
Meanwhile, Fung is upset that her husband was released without any charges being filed. “Is today [yesterday] I know he loose when he come home. I run he down with a cutlass and a knife and he ain’t come back,” an upset Fung related.
She said she then went to the police station to inquire why the man was out and was told by an officer that he was released “because there was no report” and he was being held since Monday.
“I behave bad. And then they asking to take my statement. They ain’t been and check on me daughter nothin’ and they saying that they can’t file charges until she come out the hospital. I don’t feel that is fair,” Fung vented.
Meanwhile, Commander of Police ‘C’ Division Balram Persaud told this newspaper that the man was placed on bail after his 72-hour custody period had elapsed. He said that statements were taken from the child yesterday and a medical was received. Statements were also taken by the mother he said. He further said that he was sure that charges will soon be filed against the man.
