Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday ordered that two men be remanded to prison when they appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for allegedly raping a 16-year-old girl.
The duo was not required to enter pleas to the indictable joint charge of rape.
It is alleged that between December 12 and 14, 43-year-old Winston Adams, the proprietor of Skyline Taxi Service of North East La Penitence and his friend, 39-year-old Noel Cromwell called “Bull Dog”, of Dowding Street, Kitty, allegedly raped a 16-year-old girl.
Adams’ lawyer, Adrian Thompson, had applied for reasonable bail for him on the grounds that his client was innocent of the charge and that he was prepared to vigorously defend him. He noted that his client was picked up yesterday by the police who used a car that Cromwell was also seated in.
He went on to say that no Identification Parade was ever conducted for the teenage girl to say whether or not his client was one of the persons who had allegedly raped her.
“Your worship, my client doesn’t even know what the girl looks like”, noted Thompson.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Alexis David Hossanah, objected to the bail application on the grounds of the seriousness, prevalence, nature of the offence and the manner in which it was committed. Adams and Cromwell are expected to make another court appearance on December 30.
Reports are that Adams had used his car to pick up a male and the teenage girl from the seawall on December 12 and had taken the male home. Instead of taking the teen to her home he allegedly took her to Cromwell’s home, where he and Cromwell allegedly raped her.
It was also alleged that the teen was kept for a few days at Cromwell’s home. Last Tuesday the teen was said to have escaped and made a report of the incident to the police station.
