Following meetings with Commissioner of Police Henry Greene and Commander of ‘C’ Dvision Balram Persaud, Sharon Fung, the mother of the teen girl who was allegedly chopped by her stepfather last week, has said the police have promised that the man would be charged and an arrest warrant issued for him.
However, she said no warrant would have had to be issued for Alwin Clarke, her reputed husband, if the police had not released him or if they had gone with her on Sunday night to the place where he was staying.
“De police call me today [yesterday] and tell me how dem guh charge he and carry the matter to court and leh a arrest warrant issue,” the woman told Stabroek News yesterday. She said she would have to follow up the matter.
The woman met with Greene and Persaud on Monday.
The woman told Stabroek News she met with Greene earlier in the day and he informed her that he had read the story in the newspaper and advised her to meet with Persaud, whom he had already spoken to. Balram later informed her to return to his office and also that the man might have been charged on Monday.
“It is very fatiguing to be running up and down but I need justice for my child,” the woman lamented on Monday afternoon. While grateful that Greene and his commander met her, the woman said she would only be satisfied after the man is placed before the court. “If dem deh listen me last night [Sunday night] he woulda done get arrest,” the woman said. She said she was informed where her reputed husband was and she went to the Vigilance Station but was told she had to wait until the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) rank returned. “Dem tell me how the man deh pun self bail and he is to come back on a certain date and how police wuk don’t go like how I want it,” she said. Fung said after that reception she had no intention of returning to the station, hence her move to Greene’s office.
Christine Dick, 16, of 27 Coldingen, East Coast Demerara, was allegedly chopped last Monday evening when she intervened in an argument between Fung and her irate stepfather. According to Fung, she and her reputed husband were having an argument when Dick intervened asking her stepfather, “Why you always cussing up we mother?” Fung said the man went for a saw, came back and inflicted the wound to the girl’s right hand.
The matter was reported to the Vigilance Station and the man was taken into custody that night. Commander Persaud had told this newspaper that the man was placed on bail after his 72-hour custody period had elapsed. He said that statements were taken from the child on Saturday and a medical was received. Statements were also taken by the mother, he said. He further said that he was sure that charges will soon be filed against the man.
Dick was released from the hospital on Monday and her mother said she is recovering.
