The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) on Wednesday presented the Toucan II Multi-Purpose Club of Buxton with a 32-inch flat screen television set to help entertain and educate its members.
In a press release the army said Lieutenant Dawn Robertson handed over the Toshiba TV set to the Club at its Children’s Christmas party held at the Friendship Primary School. Army ranks and officers also distributed goody bags to children at the party.
According to the release the gift was another demonstration of the GDF’s commitment to strengthening communities through efforts to create safe environments for the positive development of youth. Elder and co-founder Yvette Herod said her organisation continues to be grateful to the GDF for its support. She said the Club caters to youth from ages seven to 21 and aims to help members develop into productive citizens. Herod said the television will be used to air historical and educational material for the benefit of the youth.
The release said this donation is one of many the army has made to the club over the past two years. A few months ago the GDF donated a sewing machine and it had earlier donated a four-burner gas cooker.
