Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday ordered that a mother of three be remanded to prison when she appeared before her at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court for allegedly attempting to murder her reputed husband.

Onecia Kemraj of Itaballi Landing, Mazaruni River, was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge of attempted murder.

It is alleged that on December 21, at her Itaballi home, Kemraj, with intent to commit murder, wounded Gregory King.

Her lawyer had applied for bail for her on the grounds that she had no previous conviction, that she is a dedicated churchgoer and that the incident was an unfortunate one.

The lawyer explained that Kemraj had been a victim of domestic violence for many years at the hands of her reputed husband and that “when a person has had enough they retaliate and my client only stood up for herself”.

He said that King was injured as a result of the altercation and instead of leaving him to suffer even more, Kemraj took him to the hospital.

The lawyer had asked that the court take into consideration that his client made no attempts to flee since she had cooperated fully with the police.

However, Prosecutor Stephen Telford had objected to the bail application on the grounds that King is currently hospitalised.

He said that Kemraj had stabbed King near the region of his heart.

Kemraj, who appeared regretful, was later escorted out of the court by a policeman.

She will make another court appearance on January 16 next year.
