In a statement issued yesterday, police said a team was dispatched to the area after an initial report was made that the men robbed the camp. However, police said the ranks made contact with workers attached to Cyrilda De Jesus’ mining camp in the Waini on Friday.
According to police, six men, four of whom were armed with firearms, entered the mining camp on Thursday at 6.30am. The men enquired about the whereabouts of the general manager of the mining operations; however, he was not there at the time. During the episode, one of the men assaulted a worker with his firearm, after which the gang left.
Police said the men did not discharge any rounds or rob the camp as was initially reported to the police.
