A new optimism – 2010

Introduction:

There is a great need in our nation for a true sense of optimism and patriotism. Many of us remember singing the National Anthem while we were growing up. We dutifully said the National Pledge and even sang words such as “I want to build this land that belongs to me…” In 2010, let us strive for a resurgence of patriotism and a new focus for national optimism, remembering that collective patriotism comes about when the people of a nation are standing together in solidarity.

The political agenda for 2010 must portray the belief that we really can make this country successful.

There must be a radical change in the way the rule of law is administered; decisions must be made in a timely and efficient manner; and there must be resolutions that meet the needs and expectations of the public. Only then will we start to see optimism and hope spring forth for the future of Guyana.

We need to realize there is a lot more to be done to improve our economy and create jobs, which will provide hope for our people.

Our vision must clearly focus on the long term. We must jettison the aid and grant driven cash flow muddling, which the PPP confuses with development.

By that I mean we must focus less on seeking small handouts (eg the recent US$5.9 million from China) and more on fundamental policies that will transform Guyana.  Remittances must become less important for families who must obtain a better living from high-quality jobs in Guyana.

Our government must have a sensible foreign policy linked to our economic interests.  We must throw old Cold War sentiments, which the PPP still harbours, into the dustbin. The PPP is causing this country to stagnate economically because of its backward foreign policy.

Conclusion

Solidarity breeds patriotism and patriotism breeds optimism and hope. When we as a people, in cooperation with a competent government, can put aside our petty differences and focus on the future of this country we will actualize the Guyana we have desired for so long. Our own Guyanese dream. It is also then that we will have a Guyana our children will want to proudly live in for the rest of their lives. A unified and optimistic nation is a successful nation. It’s time for Guyana to be unified, optimistic and successful. Make it happen.

Happy New Year and best wishes for all of us for 2010.  Until next year “Roop”
