An Alness Village man was killed on Sunday night when he became the victim of a hit and run accident near a popular nightspot in Manchester Village. The driver later abandoned the vehicle and escaped and police have seized the vehicle.
Dead is Albert Smith, 32, of Alness Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident occurred around midnight on Sunday.
“The car just driving fast, lick down the man and them din even stop fuh see what happen,” one witness said.
According to a police press release, Smith was attempting to cross the road when he was struck down by the vehicle with licence plate number PJJ 7123 and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Port Mourant Hospital.
According to a friend of Smith’s the man was on the road drinking beers at a popular nightspot in Manchester village. He had just parked his bicycle and was talking with friends when the car came and hit him and fled.
Eyewitnesses urged another car to give chase and the car was eventually found in Alness Village parked, but no one was in it.
The police said that the vehicle has been taken into police custody as investigations continue.
