Javid Sheriff of Port Kaituma Water Front, North West District, had entered a not guilty plea to the charge of unlawful possession of ammunition.
He denied that on Christmas Day he had four .38 rounds of ammunition in his possession without having a firearm licence in force at the time. The matter was transferred to the Matthew’s Ridge Magistrate’s Court for February 2 next year.
His lawyer Paul Fung-a-Fat had stated that his client had suffered injuries to his right temple, left shoulder and right forearm at the hands of the police.
He also noted that his client made no confession that the ammunition was his and added that “an innocent man won’t confess to a crime that he hasn’t committed”.
However, Prosecutor Stephen Telford told the court that Sheriff had told the police shortly after he was arrested that he lives in Mabaruma.
The prosecutor then objected to the bail application on the grounds that the charge is only bailable when special reasons are attached to it. He noted that the defence presented none.
Sheriff was later escorted out of the court by a policeman.
