Jaw broken over call to `old friend’

Thirty-three-year-old Christopher Ross, a father two of Lot 11 Section B, Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara, had pleaded not guilty to the charge of inflicting grievous bodily harm on another man.

It is alleged that on December 28, he unlawfully and maliciously inflicted grievous bodily harm on Mark Major.

His lawyer Sasha Roberts had applied for reasonable bail for him on the grounds that her client poses no risk of flight and that he had no previous convictions.

She stated that the incident stemmed from Major’s habitual telephoning of Ross’ wife to pester her. She stated that as a result of this the men had a scuffle at Stabroek Market.

Ross then stated that for the last several weeks Major had been calling his wife’s phone, his son’s phone and “even my phone he calls to speak to my wife”.

He noted that on several occasions he told Major to desist from doing so but that he “disrespectfully” continued calling to talk to his wife.

However, Major stated that he only came back to Guyana from Trinidad on Christmas Eve and that he only called Ross’ wife once to find out how she was doing since they were old friends.

He stated that he suffered a fractured left jaw as a result of the scuffle that ensued between Ross and him.

Ross is expected to make another court appearance on January 19, where the medical certificate on Major’s injuries is to be presented to the court.
