The Mayor and City Council will be removing all “objectionable structures” on pavements, parapets and other thoroughfares today.
In a press release the Council advised all street vendors that they are required to remove all boxes, trays, barrels, stands, stalls and other structures used for vending over the festive season.
The Council said many pavements and parapets along Regent and Water streets are continually encumbered with vending structures which inconvenience other citizens. In light of this it has instructed its chief engineer and chief constable to remove all such structures from its facilities.
According to the release the Council said vendors who obstruct the free movement of citizens with these encumbrances are flouting the Municipal and District Councils Act 28:01.
This Act empowers the city engineers to remove any such items, it added, and as such the Council is asking persons guilty of this offence to desist or it will be forced to take legal action against them.
