No casino gambling
Grenadian Prime Minister Tillman Thomas has given the thumbs down to casino gambling on the island.
Swiss developer Zublin wants to construct two casinos as part of a $115 million project, and argues that the casino aspect of the planned development is a crucial pillar of the enterprise.
The company says hundreds of Grenadians will be employed in the project that involves the construction of a hotel, a second cruise ship terminal and a casino.
But Thomas said in a television interview that a cabinet ruling in favour of casinos would be a decision against his governing National Democratic Congress campaign promises, and he wants no part of it.
St Lucia has meanwhile announced plans to press ahead with the construction of its first casino this year.
Anguilla elections
While the people of neighbouring St Kitts and Nevis are still awaiting an election date announcement, Anguillans have been informed by their outgoing chief minister that they will be going to the polls on 15 February.
Chief Minister Osborne Fleming announced the date at a public meeting of the governing Anguilla United Front Party on Tuesday night.
The Anguilla parliament was being dissolved yesterday.
Two other political parties, the Anguilla United Movement and the Anguilla Progressive Party, have indicated that they will be contesting the election.
A handful of independents are also expected in the race.
Finance Minister Victor Banks has replaced Fleming as the leader of the governing party.
