An 18-year-old was yesterday placed on $25,000 bail when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday  and the court heard how he and another tried to sell stolen chicken to its former owner.

Jason Adams was jointly charged with Jewel Captain, who was not in court, with the offence. It is alleged that on November 28, 2009 at Regent Street Bourda, Adams and Captain stole 209 pounds of plucked chicken from Jilin Lu.

Adams’s lawyer in his submission for bail for his client told the court that this was his client’s first alleged offence and said that the act was innocently done because all parties involved were vendors.

However, Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford, while not objecting to bail, told the court that on the day in question, the virtual complainant, with whom the defendants worked, had purchased 500 pounds of chicken for his restaurant.

The defendants were caught, Telford said, when they tried to sell the stolen chicken to the man who had sold the chicken to Lu.

The man informed Lu and Lu in turn called the police. The stolen chicken was returned to Lu.

Adams is to make his next court appearance on January 12.
