CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand, CMC – Captain Andre Creary stroked a half-century but West Indies Under-19s still went under by six wickets in their second unofficial warm-up match against a full-strength Northern Districts team on Thursday as they continued their build-up to the ICC Under-19 World Cup.
West Indies were routed for 176 off 46.3 overs after losing the toss at Bay Oval and Northern Districts raced to 176 for four off 44.2 overs to win handsomely.
Creary stroked 56 and got good support from Jermaine Blackwood who scored 39 and Yannic Carriah who got 26.
In reply, Graham Alridge hammered an unbeaten 55 as the hosts won in a canter to compensate for their loss against the Young Windies on Tuesday.
Team manager Omar Khan said that the match had been significant for the players despite the loss, especially playing in bleak, chilly weather.
“The conditions were very strange to our players. It was overcast and very cold and the ball was seaming a lot,” Khan said.
“It was good that the guys got these kind of conditions to play in and they can only improve their cricket by being involved in matches under different conditions.”
West Indies play their first official warm-up against Australia tomorrow night (Eastern Caribbean time) before playing the second on the following day against Ireland.
They will open their preliminary round campaign against Pakistan next Thursday in the curtain-raising game in Palmerston North.
