In a press release the party said the year ended with the Guyana Revenue Authority boasting of the collection of billions in revenues in excess of official projections, but with public service workers receiving “an arbitrarily imposed paltry 6% increase in wages and salaries.”
The PNCR said it is therefore evident that despite the steep increases in collected taxation revenues, the administration has been doing very little to give relief to the thousands of Guyanese workers who have joined the growing army of working poor who are challenged to provide for their families.
The party said it expects that during this year consultations between government and the opposition will be really meaningful, local government reform becomes a reality, National Broadcast Legislation to establish a National Broadcast Authority will materialise; Freedom of Information Legislation will be passed in the National Assembly; crime and road accidents will be reduced and that torture and other malpractices by the disciplined forces will be eliminated along with other unprofessional conduct within their ranks.
The PNCR also said it expects that the demand for an international inquiry into the involvement of President Bharrat Jagdeo’s administration in criminal activities including the murder of over 200 citizens will become reality.
Meanwhile, foremost among its activities for 2010 will be the preparation for Local Government Elections, the implementation of shared governance and early preparations for the 2011 regional and national elections.
