The Regional Democratic Council of Region Five says it has successfully completed its capital works programme for 2009 from its budget of over $207M.
Regional Executive Officer (REO), Floyd France told Stabroek News that some of the projects that were completed included the construction of the reinforced concrete/timber bridge at Rosignol/Blairmont intersection and the completion of the second phase of the No. 8 Secondary School.
The REO said that a number of roads were also rehabilitated to bitumen surfaces throughout the region while other roads and drains were also maintained.
He pointed out too that two physiotherapy buildings were constructed at the Fort Wellington and Mahaicony Hospitals. A pharmacy was also built at the Mahaicony Hospital due to the increased number of visitors to the institution.
France said that because of the demand for the pharmacy, permission was sought for it to be built and he was happy that it was granted and that persons are satisfied with the service.
The region also received $43M under the miscellaneous road project which was used for the rehabilitation of a number of roads.
He said the region also monitored and supervised road and drainage and irrigation projects that were undertaken by the 10 Neighbourhood Democratic Councils through the $3M subvention.
A dormitory was constructed at Mahaicony to provide accommodation for the increased number of Amerindian students who are being accepted at secondary schools on the coast while a nursery school was also constructed at Mora Point in the Mahaicony Creek.
France said that despite some constraints faced, the region performed satisfactorily. He also noted that savings from some projects were used to undertake other works that were slated for 2010 and he thanked the Ministry of Finance for making that possible.
The REO also expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Local Government
for its support and guidance as it carried out the works.
