A bus filled with passengers slammed into an electricity pole and overturned at the Rupert Craig Highway at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara just before 6pm yesterday after the driver experienced a seizure.
The driver as well as a few passengers suffered injuries but others escaped unhurt. The fence of the building at Lot 14 Rupert Craig Highway was destroyed. Ray Assanah, who was sitting in the front passenger seat said that the bus was proceeding east at a “reasonable” pace. In front of the Sparendaam Police Station, “the driver start catching fits, biting his tongue”, he said. Assanah recalled that the mini-bus then began swaying from side to side across the road and the conductor then called for the bus’s engine to be turned off.
Assanah said that he reached over and turned off the ignition and the bus crashed into the post and fence and overturned. Persons rushed to the scene and pulled the passengers out of the vehicle. Some sustained cuts and bruises. Those injured were taken to the hospital while the mini-bus was towed away shortly after.
Police and fire service officers were present at the scene and workers from the electricity company disconnected power from the home as a result of the fallen post, which also brought down some wires.
