A miner was sentenced to 18 months in jail by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson after he pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting his employer.
Rodney Roberts, called Burnham, 39, of Fifth Avenue, Bartica pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting his employer at Tamakay Backdam, Mazaruni, but he offered an explanation.
Roberts told the magistrate that he was “very sorry for what I have done, I was under the influence of alcohol.”
Roberts said that he and others were drinking all day and he wanted two beers but his employer was already asleep by then. Roberts admitted to entering the shop and waking her up but he does not remember “feeling she up.”
Prosecutor, Inspector Stephen Telford told the court that on the day in question at 4:00 hours the VC was in her bed with her husband when she felt a hand on her.
The VC, Telford said, was asleep and upon opening her eyes felt her husband to her side sleeping in a different direction. She then took a torch light and it was the defendant who was rubbing her.
The defendant ran out of the room and made good his escape, Telford told the court.
Subsequently, a report was made to the police and the defendant was contacted and told of the allegation. He was subsequently arrested and after further investigations he was charged.
Roberts told the magistrate that he wanted to end the matter since he does not remember much of what had happened.
When he was told that the charge carried a jail sentence, Roberts responded that he would do it if that meant the end of the matter and he apologised for being under the influence of liquor.
