Denzel Huntley, of Powis Crescent, was out for a bicycle ride shortly after 5:30pm in his street when he was struck down by motor car PJJ 285. The car was being driven by a 16-year-old female student of the Wismar Christianburg Secondary School.
According to an eyewitness, she had heard Denzel’s mother calling out to him to go into the yard. “But he keep riding and the next thing I hear was dis big bang,” said the witness. She later noticed the child being dragged by the still-moving car. “Like she din even know dat she been dragging dah boy under deh car and I start hollering and duh is when she stop,” the witness added. She also said that the unlicensed teen stopped only for a short while before taking off again with the young boy still pinned underneath. It took the loud appeals of several persons in the street before the car came to a halt for the second time.
Persons in the neighbourhood said that after the boy rolled out from under the vehicle, the driver failed to exit the car and drove off to her home, which is nearby. “She aint even come out fuh see what happen she just went home, park and went into her house and sat down and aint say a word to anybody,” said a second witness.
The child was conscious after the incident but suffered a gaping wound to the back of his head. He was quickly rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex. A visit to the hospital saw the child being supported by an oxygen mask as a doctor and nurses attended to his wound before transferring him to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation after he was diagnosed as being in a serious but stable condition.
The teen driver and her parents later reported to the Mackenzie Police Station, after visiting the child at the Linden Hospital.
