The Guyanese woman who was nabbed with some 50 pounds of at the JFK International Airport last week Tuesday was denied bail when she appeared before Magistrate Lois Bloom in a New York Court last Friday.
Dorothy Sears was remanded to prison as investigation continues on the local and international front to determine who was responsible for supplying some 50 pounds of cocaine to the woman.
Sears was nabbed at the New York airport last week Tuesday after a specially trained dog sniffed out a pink suitcase with an orange ribbon which was tagged to her. Following questioning by authorities the woman, who was also found with marijuana packed in her brassiere, admitted that she had checked in the suitcase at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport on the Delta Airline flight.
She said she was given the suitcase by a man and she initially thought it was marijuana but figured it was cocaine when she felt the weight of the suitcase and was instructed not to pick up the suitcase when it arrived in New York.
Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) head James Singh last Friday told Stabroek News that his unit and the police have launched an investigation into the bust in collaboration with their counterparts in New York.
Meanwhile, Rayon Jarvis who was also busted at the same airport with 12,172.7 grammes of cocaine last week Sunday has also been remanded to prison.
