The development of cricket in the ancient county of Berbice took another step forward last Thursday when the Berbice Cricket Board joined with Region Six Contractor Annirud Ramcharitar to launch the BCB/Ramcharitar Construction Firm 40-over First Division Knockout tournament.
The tournament will feature Berbice’s 13 first division teams and is scheduled to bowl off early in the new month.
Public Relations Officer and Chairman of the BCB Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster hailed the launching of the tournament as another red letter day in the development of cricket in Berbice. He noted that cricketers at all levels in 2010 will be involved in cricket as never before since the board intends to dominate all the Inter-County tournaments this year. Foster acknowledged the contribution of Regional Chairman Zulfikar Mustapha who has played a major role in obtaining the sponsorship and noted that the relationship between the BCB and the Regional Administration was one of co-operation and respect for each other.
Keith Foster, President of the BCB, praised Ramcharitar for coming on board with his $220,000 sponsorship in these difficult economic times and pledged that the tournament will be well organized and all funds accounted for. He also assured that the standard of play would be high.
Moreover, he cautioned all teams that indiscipline would not be tolerated in 2010 and no player who is indisciplined would gain selection on any Berbice team.
Regional Chairman Mustapha congratulated the BCB on the launching of another cricket tournament.
He noted the investment the government has made in sports and the importance of sports in a community to help keep youths away from drugs and crime.
Mustapha also commended Ramcharitar for his investment in the development of youths in Berbice and pledged his administration’s cooperation with the BCB and all sporting associations that are prepared to work hard.
Ramcharitar in his brief remarks stated that his firm was pleased to be associated with the BCB and expressed his confidence in the ability of the board to host a successful tournament. The winner of the tournament is scheduled to receive $50,000 while the runner-up will pocket $25,000.
