NORTH SOUND, Antigua, CMC – Narsingh Deonarine celebrated his call-up to the West Indies team for the upcoming tour of Australia with a splendid, unbeaten century for Guyana to help them earn a draw with Trinidad and Tobago in their WICB regional first class match yesterday. On the same afternoon the team for the limited-overs tour was announced, the 26-year-old left-hander made 104 not out at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium to record his seventh first-class century.
The controlled knock steered Guyana to 265 for five after they had been set 343 to win the first day-night first-class match using the pink ball.
Earlier, T&T declared at 199 for eight after resuming on their overnight score of 147 for seven.
Deonarine went to the crease with his team in trouble at 96 for three and added 121 for the fourth wicket with skipper Sewnarine Chattergoon, who made a mature 73 in 4-½ hours, off 233 balls with nine boundaries.
The pair complemented each other with Deonarine hitting over the top and Chattergoon dropping anchor.
Deonarine reached his 50 from just 44 balls in 40 minutes as he launched a counter-attack. With the score on 203 for three at tea, a victory looked possible but after the break, the Trinidadians set defensive fields, bowled one side of the wicket and the batsmen opted not to take up the challenge.
He reached his century with a savage pull for six over midwicket off the 145th ball he faced. It was Deonarine’s third six and he also added ten boundaries to that tally.
Earlier in the day, Trinidad and Tobago raced to their eventual declaration with Denesh Ramdin pushing on to 26 not out from his overnight four not out. Rayad Emrit rattled up a run-a-ball, unbeaten 20 to set-up the declaration half hour into the day’s play.
The two teams now move on to Barbados for the third round of matches where Trinidad and Tobago will face traditional archrivals Barbados at Kensington Oval and Guyana will take on Jamaica at the new Foursquare Oval.
