The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) says it repaired 19, 393 leaks last year.
According to a Government Information Agency press release GWI recorded about 18, 231 (94%) complaints about small leaks and 1,162 (6%) for large leaks.
GWI said at the divisional level all divisions met their targets. Division Three -East Coast Demerara continued to receive the most complaints. A total of 99.5 percent (381) and 99.6 percent (6,887) small and large leak complaints respectively for the division were resolved. As regard response time, the agency said it has improved significantly with reports being cleared in less than five days.
The percentage of small leak reports cleared in less than five days, GWI said increased from 40% in January 2009 to more than 80% in December last year. For large leak reports, the percentage increased from 33% in January to 74% in December, 2009, it said.
According to GWI the reduction of non-revenue water is part of GWI’s 2008-2010 strategic ‘Turn Around Plan’ to ensure that its consumers benefit from better and safer water supply.
The agency is geared to reduce non-revenue water from 60% to 25% in the coming months.
