‘Women’s collective’ in Haiti relief drive

A self-described women’s collective is urging mothers and other women to participate in activities it has planned to assist mothers in Haiti.

In a press release the group, which comprises representatives of social, political and faith-based organizations met under the aegis of the Women’s Affairs Bureau of the labour and human services ministry.

The aim of the meeting was to determine specific ways of meeting the needs of women in Haiti.

The group intends to raise funds and collect dry goods and non-perishable items to be shipped to Haiti at a later date.

A walk-a-thon has also been planned where women will traverse several streets to allow other women to come out to donate cash or other items.

The walk-a-thon is set for Saturday from 6.30 am to 10 am. The group will be assembling at Parliament Buildings. Details of the route will be published in the press.

The group emphasised that the pride and dignity of Haitians must be taken into consideration when contributions “in kind” are made, the release said.
