Devon Higgins, called ‘Shortman,’ was remanded to prison after he was allegedly caught disposing of marijuana.

Higgins, 22, of Linden, pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking when the charge  was read by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

It is alleged that on January 15, at One Mile, Wismar, Linden, Higgins had 30 grammes of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

His lawyer Rexford Jackson applied for bail on the grounds that the cannabis was not found on his client. However, Prosecutor Shellon Daniels objected to the application, arguing that the offence is only bailable if a special circumstance is attached but the defence had presented none to the court. She stated that the police were on mobile patrol when they saw Higgins, who is known to them, running toward a fence and throwing a bulky object into a yard.
She said the police then stopped, searched Higgins and later retrieved the object he threw away in the area. Upon closer inspection they discovered the bulky object to be a quantity of cannabis.  He was then arrested for the offence.

The matter has been transferred to the Christianburg Magistrates’ Court for a hearing on January 28.
