This year, the Stabroek Market area will be enhanced by street lights and a traffic light and will also be cleared of encumbrances to heighten security, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reported.
Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn disclosed that the ministry had earmarked this project a few years ago but owing to setbacks was unable to see it through.
However, he said the ministry was successful in clearing encumbrances and illuminating some areas around the market. The ministry sees the installation of street lights around the minibus parks in the market’s vicinity as critical, GINA stated.
In 2009, government installed street lights from Providence to Timehri in Region Four; West Bank Demerara, Region Three; and Anna Regina, Region Two. Currently, 358 street lights are being installed from Vreed-en-Hoop to Parika and this project which is 70% complete should be completed within a few months.
