A speed-boat loaded with cargo collided with a ‘farm boat’ in the Essequibo River yesterday and quick action by a passing boat saw the rescue of the occupants of the ‘farm boat’.

The incident occurred at about 10 am yesterday. According to reports, the boat, ‘Striker’ which is reportedly owned by Secretary of the Bartica Speedboat Association, Oscar Joseph, had just left Parika for Bartica when the collision occurred.  It is not clear what caused the incident but this newspaper was told that the ‘Striker’ was moving at a fast rate.

The ‘Striker’ was said to be loaded with cargo. It collided with the ‘farm-boat’, which was heading to Parika in the vicinity of the Two Brothers wharf, this newspaper was told. The ‘farm-boat’ went under but a passing boat rendered assistance and the occupants were saved. No major injuries were sustained. Speed-boat operators at Parika said that they were aware of the incident but were reluctant to divulge any details.
