The new asphalt plant at Garden of Eden, East Bank Demerara, is providing approximately 900 tonnes of asphalt per week and has been satisfying the many road projects around the country.
The Government Information Agency (GINA) said in a release that the plant which the Ministry of Public Works and Communications acquired from India began operating last year.
The new equipment will enhance the machinery capacity of the Force Account Unit within the ministry, the release said.
According to Minister of Transport and Hydraulics, Robeson Benn, government acquired the plant for US$153,900 which is approximately 10 to 15 percent below its initial cost.
The previous plant was a major pollutant in the area and often malfunctioned, causing delays in completing projects promptly. Benn noted that the use of this new plant has saved government more than 50% in cost as compared to the old plant, GINA added.
