Masked men robbed a supermarket at Berbice yesterday after attacking the cashier, but public-spirited residents responded and managed to run down one of the men who they later handed over to police.
Police said that part of the stolen money, which totalled over $300,000, was recovered when the bandit was nabbed. Reports are that the men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, stormed BA Sattaur and Sons Supermarket at Cumberland, East Canje and attacked the cashier, Bibi Sattaur.
The men held Sattaur at gunpoint, snatched the money and fled. An alarm was raised and according to the police, residents gave chase and managed to nab one of the men while his accomplice escaped. He was found with part of the stolen booty. Police are investigating.
