An Annai man, for whom an arrest warrant was issued for assaulting a policeman, was on Wednesday shot in the leg after he attempted to escape from a policeman who arrested him in connection with a recent break-and-enter incident.
According to a release from the police, 25-year-old Rockliffe Rodrigues of Aranaputa Valley, Annai was arrested at his home around 03:30hrs when he attempted to escape but was shot in the leg by the arresting rank.
He has since been admitted to the Lethem Hospital under police guard.
The release said the young man was wanted pending investigations into a report of break and enter and larceny committed on a shop at Aranaputa Valley on January 27.
An arrest warrant was also issued by the court during May 2009 in relation to a matter where he was charged with assaulting a policeman.
