Director of the Solid Waste Management Unit of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council Hubert Urling told Stabroek News Wed-nesday that the facility is now time-tabled for completion within the second quarter of this year. He said in addition to construction, the access road leading to the site is also being completed.
During a visit to the Eccles site, this newspaper observed workers attached to H Nauth and Sons Construction Company-the firm which was awarded the $148M contract to construct the access road-carrying out works while work was ongoing on the laying of foundation work for the waste management facility.
According to an employee of the construction firm, loam is being laid on the 2.5 kilometre access road leading to the facility from the Eccles Industrial Site area and the road will be capped sometime over the next few months.
Meanwhile, the Mandela landfill is being phased out as garbage continues to be collected there until the anticipated opening of the Haags-Bosch facility.
The new facility, which is expected to serve some 122,000 households, had been behind schedule for completion. Its completion will bring a sigh of relief to residents living close to the Mandela landfill. The noxious fumes from several fires at the landfill over the past years have affected residents living in neighbouring communities.
