Former national junior chess champion Taffin Khan upset national champion Wendell Meusa to take sole possession of the lead after five rounds of the Trophy Stall sponsored tournament.
Trailing Khan by half a point after Tuesday’s fourth round, Meusa went all out for a win last Thursday but the move backfired and he crashed to defeat.
The points standings after five rounds reads Khan points, Errol Tiwari four, Meusa and Irshad Mohamed three-and-a-half, Brian Thompson and Shiv Nandalall three each, Loris Nathoo, two and a half, Carlos Allicock, Chino Chung, Dennis Dillon, Ryan Singh and Nowrattan Persaud, two points each and Michael Pereira, one–and-a-half points.
The tournament will continue today from 10am at the Keishar’s Sports Club.
In other key matches on Tuesday, Shiv Nandalall was unable to convert a winning position against Errol Tiwari and lost; Irshad Mohamed got past Chino Chung while Nathoo and Pereira played to a draw.
On Thursday Tiwari secured an endgame win over Thompson; Mohamed got past Allicock; Nandalall got the better of Chung; Nathoo defeated Persaud and Dillon defeated Pereira.
