According to GINA, the announcement was made by Singh yesterday who said that: “the Guyanese economy displayed striking resilience last year, despite depressed external demand and lower prices for certain key exports.” The 2009 Budget had projected real growth of the non-sugar gross domestic product at 1.8 percent while overall growth was projected at 4.7 percent- projections which were strongly influenced by the expected recovery of sugar.
Last year on February 9, Singh announced a budget to the tune of $128.9 billion the largest in the country’s history. The 2009 budget was an 8.1 percent increase over the budget for the previous year, which was $119.3 billion.
