A hire car driver was placed on $65,000 bail on a charge of fraudulent conversion on Monday.

Ron Lewis, 35, of 47 Princes Street pleaded guilty with explanation when he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court. He was charged with converting $60,000, which was to be used to purchase a headlight and a trafficator light and to pay the balance to the mechanic for motor car HB1215, property of Fizal Ali.

Lewis, in his explanation, said that no money was given to him; rather, he signed an agreement with Ali, who is his boss, to work and fix the damages to the car since he was driving the car and “jam it up.” Ali, however, said that Lewis signed the agreement, saying he will take the $60,000 and purchase the lights and pay the mechanic for the repairs and he did not do it. He said that he spent two weeks trying to contact Lewis to get him to repay the money or go to the station. He said that Lewis was apprehended by police who were present at a function at Princes and High streets.

Lewis is to return to Court 10 on February 16.
