A three-week teachers’ mini-tennis workshop will commence this afternoon at 4pm at the National Park’s courts.
The course will be conducted by national junior coordinator Shelly Daly Ramdyhan and according to a release from the GLTA the programme is a part of the GLTA’s mini-tennis schools initiative.
According to the release, the aim of the programme, which will be held every Saturday for the next three weeks, “is to reestablish excitement about the game among teachers especially those who have been newly assigned to primary schools so that they can go back and execute the programme successfully.”
The programme will also be staged in New Amsterdam with coach Carol Humphrey conducting the programme to six primary schools at the Republic Bank Tennis Court from 9am.
The participating schools will receive a quantity of mini-racquets and soft balls to assist with the re-establishment of their programme, the release stated.
According to the release, the mini-racquets and softer balls are geared for children under 10 years of age to develop hand-eye coordination. The programme which is subsidized by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) was re-introduced in 2006 in 17 primary schools primarily in Georgetown. These events have been rescheduled to coincide with this weekend visit from the ITF Regional Development Officer, Anthony Jeremiah who visits Guyana annually to monitor the programmes. The top ranked schools in mini-tennis continue to be Marian Academy and St. Angela’s Primary.
