Cyclists attached to the various clubs under the umbrella of the Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) will be back in the saddle on Saturday competing for cash prizes when the Roraima Bikers Club stages its fourth annual George `Boy Blue’ Cumberbatch Memorial cycle race.
The event will be held around the inner circuit of the National Park and will be jointly sponsored by former president of the Guyana Cycling Federation and Cumberbatch’s teammate Clifford `Toto’ Johnson and George Humphrey, a former president of the Roraima Bikers Club.
Some 10 events are carded for the day including three BMX bike races, two races for veteran riders, one 10-lap event for juniors/juveniles, 10 lap events for categories 1-2 and 3-4 cyclists and an Open 30-lap event.
Roraima Bikers’ Brian Allen said yesterday that based on the amount of the participants, there might be an additional Over 35 Mountain Bike race.
Last year’s Open 30- lap event was won by Christopher Holder with Junior Niles second and Walter Grant Stuart third while Geron Williams stopped Holder’s attempt for a junior/senior double when he won the juveniles/juniors 10-lap race.
Darren Allen, who won last year’s category 3-4 10-lap event and Tyrone Hamilton, winner of the category 1-2 10-lap event will be out to defend their titles.
Allen yesterday said he wanted to remind the cyclists to register and to walk with their club colours and licenses.
Meanwhile, the annual general meeting of the Roraima Bikers Club will take place on February 20 at the club’s Ketley and Sussex Street headquarters at 2pm.
